1. Choose a section of the book to dramatise in a small group. Suitable sections include where Sophie meets the pelicans or where the farmer frightens the birds off by firing his gun.
2. Students can form news teams and report on the phenomena that occurs when Lake Eyre floods. They can interview Tom Todd on his point of view as a ranger and tourists who are just visiting.
3. You may wish to discuss the end of the story and write another chapter on Pinta's journey to the Coorong.
4. Create a maze in Puzzlemaker for the students to help Pannikin and Pinta find their way to the coast. Or create a Findaword in this program.
5. Students could research Colin Thiele and find other books written by him in the library. Discuss any common themes you find in the books.
6. Show the video of 'Storm Boy' to the class and discuss Colin Thiele's approach to the pelican in this book. How does it differ from the story of Pannikin and Pinta?
7. Find out more about Peter Gouldthorpe and look for some of the other books he has illustrated. How does his style differ for each story?
8. Find out more about pelicans and their habits. How do Australian pelicans differ from other species?
