book review by The Groovy Chicks
The book Nips X1 is written by Ruth Starke. We recommend it for the age of 10 and up. It is a story about Asian children who get teased for being different to the typical blue eyed, blonde haired, tall aussies. The main character, Lan doesn't like multicultural week; he would rather celebrate being an Australian than being considered as a 'nip' So Lan took action and decided that he would change multicultural week into a cricket match. In doing so he organized a Nips cricket match against King's college, who had never been beaten.
| Ruth Starke is a very creative
writer because she uses different ideas. For example we liked how she used
the word NIPS as the schools name and initials, North Illaba Primary School
- N.I.P.S and how this same word spell SPIN backwards.
She is a great writer because at the end of the cricket match King's College wins by points, but NIPS X1 win by courage, fairness and honesty. |

NIPS X1 is a Contemporary Realistic
Fiction story that could really happen in everyday life. All the characters
have a special part in the story whether it be main, or minor. Lan is the
main character and it was his idea for the cricket match. His best friend,
Izram helped him organize the cricket game. Lan's Vietnamese parents wanted
more work and didn't agree to the idea of cricket but in the end they both
helped make uniforms for the NIPS XI cricket team.
The story is interesting right throughout the whole book. At the end of every chapter Ruth Starke leaves you begging for more!!! |
