NIPS
XI
A Book Review
by Team Gobblewockians (Liam and Stephen)
Nips XI by Ruth Starke is a well written story directed to older children. Lan Nguyen is fed up with multicultural week and being the clever person he is, comes up with a brilliant idea.
| Instead
of doing things with native dances and Vietnamese food, he
organises a cricket match to play against the state champion, Kings
College.
The events that Lan goes though are enjoyable and humourous for readers. Lan has many difficulties forming a cricket team for the school. Nips XI is a contemporary realistic story that gets across the messages that fair is always the best way to play the game and racism should never be accepted. Ruth Starke's technique is well developed and it makes the novel humourous and enjoyable. This is an excellent story showing how one person can make a difference, no matter what their skin colour. The plot is well developed and the characters are believable, although slightly stereotyped. Ruth Starke is a great writer, in using several techniques and making an unpredictable and interesting novel. Ruth Starke uses emotion and flavour in her text which makes the story very interesting. |
