NIPS X1
BOOK REVIEW!

by 'Bring it on for the funky chicks'!

Nips X1 by Ruth Starke is a book for children aged 10 and up, mainly for 'boys' because most boys like cricket and this story is based on the game, cricket. In the beginning Lan wanted to change multicultural day for a cricket match. He hated dancing and wanted to do something Australian. So he fought for a cricket team, equipment, a coach, opponents and a match.
He succeeded with all that, but lost the cricket match, however, the NIPS won on the inside for having good sportsmanship. The moral of to this story is to speak up when you have an idea and it's better to lose and play fairly, than to win and know you've cheated.
We thought that most of the characters were realistic because Lan wanted to be known as an Australian and play cricket like 'Shane Warne' and be a normal Australian boy.
Mrs. Nguyen was a typical mother who wanted the best for Lan when she said he couldn't play cricket because she thought school work was more important than cricket.
Grace, the librarian, always offered help to the NIPS. She was kind of like a mother to Lan and his friends, like when she introduced Spinner to them. Spinner was like a real life character. He used to be a legend at cricket but then he wanted to help the boys out and beat King's because they were mean to Spinner at College because he wasn't as rich as the boys at King's College and they use to tease him.
We thought Ruth Starke's writing style was creative because of her use of Aussie slang such as when Spinner said 'take the weight off your pins', and Tomas learning his first new Australian word, 'onya'. The equipment already had NIPS written on it which stands for North Illaba Primary School. Plus NIPS backwards spells spin!

We give this book a 7/10!
