Read up to the end of chapter 6, then think about these questions:

Each year Mr Drummond runs activities for Multicultural week at his school. He explains that it's to make students from different ethnic backgrounds feel special. How do these activities make Lan feel? Why does Lan think that holding a cricket match would be a better activity for Multicultural week than having students do ethnic dances in their native costumes? Do you agree with him? Why or why not?

Discuss your opinion with the others in your team.

Read to the end of chapter 15, then think about this:

The boys on Lan's team had a variety of reasons for feeling that they didn't 'fit in'. What were Thomas', Izram's Akram's and David's reasons? You can probably think of times when you felt that you didn't 'fit in'. What were the reasons then?

Your challenge is for your team to come up with a list which contains as many reasons as you can think of for why people sometimes feel they don't fit in.
When you've created your list, e-mail it to the
Nips XI Mailing List - nips@teacher.schools.net.au and see what others have said.

Will your team come up with the most reasons!

to the top Challenge 3
Finish reading the book then think about this:

Clarence McGinty didn't 'fit in' at his school either. One reason was because he was a 'scolarship boy' in a wealthy school. How was this a problem for him? The other reason was because Clarence had a different attitude to the game of cricket than was being promoted by the school team. It was Spinner's attitude to the game that finally caused him to drop out of professional cricket. Do you think he'd be surprised at the scandals happening in world cricket at the moment? What would Spinner think of 'sledging'?

Your challenge is : Explain what your team thinks spinner's attitude towards cricket was, and give your team's reasons for why you agree or disagree with him. Email your explanation and reason to the Nips XI Mailing List - nips@teacher.schools.net.au

Some of the characters in this book gained valuable knowledge through the building of Lan's cricket team. In many cases this knowledge lead them to a better understanding of others, and changed their own attitudes and the way they behaved.

Choose any character from the story whom your group thinks gained knowledge which changed their attitude or behaviour. List all the pieces of knowledge you believe that character gained over the course of the story, then say how that person's attitudes or behaviour were changed by the knowledge they gained.  OR

Name one character in the book who learnt nothing. Give your reasons for why you think that was.

E-mail your team's answer to this challenge to the Nips XI Mailing List - nips@teacher.schools.net.au for others to see.

What's the difference between a review and a summary? Even some adults have difficulties with that one! If you click this link, you'll come to a page containing a supposed review of Nips XI. In fact it is really just a brief summary. A review should closely examine a book. It should give opinions about the writing style, the characters and the plot. A good review explains why something about the book is good or bad.

Your final challenge is to create a web page containing your team's review of Nips XI. Your web page should look attractive and the review should be clear and easy to read. It must give your team's opinions about the plot, whether you thought the characters were realistic and why, and what you thought about the author's writing style and messages that the story got across. You might find it of interest to read about how the author came to write this book. If so, click here.

Your team's web page must have your team name with a .html extension as its name. There must be no spaces or capital letters in the name. For example, if your team name was 'The Green Dragons', your web page must be saved as:  thegreendragons.html

E-mail your team's page as an attachment, along with any graphics you've used, to Nips XI Maintainer - jen@teacher.schools.net.au. Please allow 24 hours for your page to be posted to the NIps Student Site. To view the webpages submitted by teams, please click here Nips XI Student Web Pages site.
