Challenge 2
Hazel Green had many valuable attributes of a true friend. One of these attributes was loyalty. Loyalty means that you give your friendship and stick up for your friends through the bad times as well as the good. It's easy to be loyal when you lose nothing by it. It's much harder when loyalty could bring you embarrassment or trouble. How many things can you list that Hazel did in the story that would have been difficult for her and which demonstrated her loyalty towards her friends.

comes up with the most examples!
Challenge 3
There are a surprising number of adults today who can't read. These people usually try to hide that fact due to embarrassment. Often even their wives or husbands don't know. Most TAFE and adult education colleges run reading courses to help such people. The problem is, how do you get them to attend if they don't want others to know that they can't read? Discuss your team's ideas for how to contact and persuade non reading adults to enroll in an adult reading course. Email your ideas Hazel Green Mail List hazel@teacher.schools.net.au |
Challenge 4
In the story, Mr Trimbel's friend wrote him a message in code. As a team, your challenge is to first work out your own code and then write down a simple question using your code. You must also provide a clue to breaking your code. Choose 2 vowels and two consonants that are used in your question, and tell us what they are. Post your team's question with the
clue to the Hazel
Green Mail List hazel@teacher.schools.net.au.
See whether anyone can answer your question! Your team must also try to
decode at least one question that another team has posted to the Mailing
List. When you work it out, send a reply to the Mailing List, with your
answer. |

Challenge 5
Hazel Green thought of herself
as a chaotic thinker. Creative and interesting ideas just popped into her
head and that was the way she liked it . She enjoyed being unpredictable.
Her friend the Yak was a logical thinker who studied patterns in things
and worked out how one thing related to another.
Both types of thinking can
be useful in solving a puzzle or problem.
Your team's final challenge is to put yourselves into Hazel Green's shoes to come up with some creative solutions to the problem below. The more 'chaotic' and unpredictable your solutions are, the better. (However they still have to work!) Create a web page which states the problem and shows the solutions you've come up with. Make the page as interesting looking as you can. Use pictures if you wish.
The Problem
It's Sam's wedding day. He's due at the church in 30 minutes which is OK because it takes 15 minutes to get there and he's nearly ready. He's put on his new dark blue suit and is looking for the blue socks to match, but he can't find them anywhere. Suddenly he looks out of the window. Someone's washed them! There they are, hanging dripping wet on the line! He doesn't have another pair of socks of the right color and he can't go squishing up the isle in soaking wet socks. What can he do?
Save your team's web page as 'your team name with a .html extension'. There must be no spaces or capital letters in the name. For example, if your team name was 'The Green Dragons', your web page must be saved as: thegreendragons.html
Email your team's page as an attachment, along with any graphics you've used, to Hazel Green Maintainer jen@teacher.schools.net.au
Please allow 24 hours for your page to be posted to the Hazel Green Student Site. To view the webpages submitted by teams, please click here Hazel Green Student Web Pages site.
