Lesson Idea and Outline
Students will complete a series of sequential learning activities based on
the Dinosaur theme.
Overview
Dinosaur Task Cards develops reading, writing, numeracy and comprehension skills
across the learning areas for lower to middle primary students.
Objectives
Time required
Time: 25 periods X 30 minutes. This includes research, discussion creating
and presentation.

1. Dinosaur Match
Materials:
Cut off the name strips, paste them on the correct picture.
Complete the picture and colour.
Paste completed activity on to page in your new Dinosaur Sketch Book.( Teacher
to prepare a special book for each student for all 24 Dinosaur activities.)

2. Dinosaur Beginning Sounds
Materials:
1. Find names of dinosaurs beginning with d, i, n, o, s, a, u, r.
2. Write these on Activity Sheet No 2.
3. Do a small illustration for 3 of the names
4. Paste completed sheet in Dinosaur Book.

3. Dinosaur Puzzle Fun
Materials:
1. Complete Dopey Dinosaur maze
2. Work out which body goes with which head eg. C3. Write at bottom of the
sheet
3. Colour drawings
4. Paste completed sheet in Dinosaur Book.

4. Story of a Dinosaur
Materials:
1. Read sheets twice each. Underline all the words you do not know.
2. Write the words in your Dinosaur book and look them up in the dictionary.
3. Colour in pictures and stick pages into your Dinosaur book.
4. Read your fossil exercise to two people and the teacher.

5. Volcanic Eruption
Materials:
1. Label the volcano, on Activity sheet No 5.
* lava comes out the volcano
* magma is the molten materials underground.
2. Colour the volcano. Draw smoke and fire.
3. Use paste and red glitter for the hot lave
4. Paste completed sheet in Dinosaur Book.

6. Camouflage
Materials:
1. Choose correct word to fill in the space.
*marshland: low watery ground
*plains: large area of water surrounded by ground
*lake: large area of water surrounded by ground
2. Draw dinosaur disguising it with it's surroundings. Colour background.
3. Paste sheets in Dinosaur book
*camouflage: disguise, conceal by matching something to it's surroundings.

7. Dotty Dinosaur
Materials:
1. Join the dots. Colour.
2. Read all the information on the sheet.
Answer these questions in your Dinosaur book ( in sentences)
a) What did duck-billed dinsoarus eat?
b) What is the smallest dinosaur?
c) How long was a stegosaurus?
d) How many metres underground were the Iguanadon bones found?
e) How big was a stegosaurus' brain?

8. Dinosaur Fossils
Materials:
1. Bones make up the skeleton of the body. Many fossils are identified by the
bones.
In the Dinosaur Reference Books, find pictures of
a) Apatosaurus
b) Triceratops
c) Dimetrodon
d) Tyrannasaurus
Match the picture with the skeletons on Activity sheets 8 a, 8b
2. Draw the skin on each fossil. Fill the gaps.

9. Ankylosaurus
Materials:
1. Find Dinosaur Reference books with information about the Ankylosaurus dinosaurs
in them.
2. Write at least half a page of information about the Ankylosaurus including
- food, environment, habits, description, enemies, and so on in your donsaur
book.
3. Colour in the picture of the Ankylosaurus, cut out and paste in Dinosaur
Book on same page as your written information .

10. Colour Brontosaurus by Number
Materials:
- 1. Colour Brontosaurus using the colour code:
2 - black
3 - green
4 - brown
5 - orange
2. Cut out Brontosaurus and write heading.
3. Paste into your Dinosaur Book.

11. Who Am I
Materials:
- Read information for each clue. Find out answere for each question- Who
am 1?
- Write name of dinosaur and draw under each clue.
- Cut into individual pages.
- Design front cover for 'Dinosaur. Who Am I?' book
- Staple pages together

12. Pentceratops
Materials:
- Colour in the dinosaur with coloured pencils
- Write name of dinosaur in your Dinosaur Book.
- Write down why you think the dinosaur was called Pentceratops.

Materials:
- Read the instructions on Activity Sheet 13a
- Colour squares using the letter and number cludes to make a dinosaur
- Paste Activity Sheet No 13b in your Dinosaur Book.
- Return Activity Sheet No 13a to file

14. Scolosaurus Maths
Materials:
- Add the equations (sums) on the Scolosaurus
- Colour Scolosaurus by the answers.
The code uses: green, brown, orange and yellow
- Cut out the Scolosaurus and write heading into Dinosaur book. Paste Scolosaurus
on same page.

15. Stegosaurus
Materials:
- Find Dinosaur Reference books with information about Stegosaurus Dinosaurs
in them.
- Write at least half a page of information about the Stegosaurus including,
food, environment, habits, description, enemies and so on in your Dinosaur
Book.
- Colour in the picture of the Stegosaurus, cut out and paste in Dinosaur
Book on same pages as the your written information.

Materials:
- Read Activity Sheet No 16a about the Allosaurus, twice.
- Answer questions on Activity Sheet No 16b.
- Complete Alphabetical order for "Just for Fun"
- Colour the Picture.
- Paste Activity sheet no 16b into your dinosaur book.
- Return Acitvity Sheet No 16a to the file
- Look at the Muttaburrasaurus on Worksheet 5

Materials:
- Read Activity Sheet No 21a about the Trachodon, twice.
- Make a Tangram dinosaur from Activity Sheet 21b. You can colour it in before
you assemble it. Display your herd of dinosaurs around the room.

Materials:

- Complete maze.

24. Design a Dinosaur
Materials:
- Read the Design a Dinosaur worksheet to two people and the teacher.
- Design a dinosaur on the poster paper
- Colour in the dinosaur and paste into your Dinosaur book
- Give your dinosaur a designer name for eg.
" Dotty Dorothy" the Dinosaur
- Write down the design features of your dinosaur; for example colour, patterns,
textures and so on.

25. Dinosaur Playdough
Materials:
Specialist Equipment: oven to bake dinosaurs
- Read information on activity Sheet No 25 twice
- Follow the instructions.
- Display dinosaurs around the room.

Art: Student work in groups of four to construct a Papier Mache Dinosaur based
on their research.
